How to hide read receipts, typing and online status
Control each Direct Message presence signal separately.
Where to find it: Avatar menu > Settings > Privacy > Direct Messages section
How to
- Enable Hide my online status to hide the green dot and stop publishing your presence while the app is open.
- Enable Hide when I am typing to stop sending the typing indicator; you can still see other people's indicator.
- Enable Do not send read receipts to hide your Seen status.
- When read receipts are hidden, you also stop seeing when other people read your messages.
What changes for the other person
- These controls do not delete messages or make a chat anonymous.
- Blocking is a separate action and prevents new messages.
Rules and what happens next
- Controls are on the Privacy screen itself in Direct Messages. You do not need to open a separate Interactions screen to find them.
- Not sending read receipts also hides received receipts from you. Hiding typing does not prevent sending messages or erase indicators someone already saw.
Common problems
- Green dot changed but DMs continue: the preference controls presence rather than who may send. Use blocking to limit a contact.
- Cannot see the other person’s Seen: check your own receipt option and recipient choices. Missing Seen does not prove the message was unread.
